My name's Tim. I'm 50, live and work in Derby, am happily married (since 1988) and have two beautiful grown-up daughters who are in their early 20s. I've been blogging away quietly at www.tenpencepiece.net since 2008 covering a diverse range of topics, but with a bias towards the joys and woes of being a mature student. Post40bloggers is a welcome addition to my world as it's always great to receive encouragement, ideas and challenges from friends who also love blogging, yet have their own unique perspective on life. I'm looking forward to sharing my passion for lifelong learning with this community as well as hearing your stories. I hope that those of you who haven't been bitten by the lifelong learning bug (yet!) feel suitably enthused and motivated to try something for yourself. Learning definitely isn't only for the young ...
Post40Bloggers - Brexit flag
Yesterday an opinion poll suggested that a majority of voters want the UK to remain in the single market. It’s encouraging that the majority take this view, as I’m old enough to remember the difficulties of trading without it. In the 1980s, before the EU single market, I worked for a...
Post40Bloggers - female student in library with books, Open University
It’s the time of year when HESA – The Higher Education Statistics Agency – issue their statistical first release covering student enrolments and qualifications obtained. Against a background of a small annual rise in all enrolments at UK HE providers (up 1%) and a slight fall in part-time ones (down 1%)...
Male academic learner
Well, after my excellent attempts at procrastination earlier on in the year, I finally decided to buckle down and sort my dissertation out. It’s been quite a journey, which is why I’ve been so uncharacteristically quiet on my blogs. I’m glad to report that after many, many more hours of work than...
Post40Bloggers - survey form and magnifying glass
‘In the future, luxury brands will create complex digital experiences and gamified realms to communicate their aesthetic.’ How interested are you in this being part of your future? Very interested Quite interested Somewhat interested Not very interested Not at all interested Uh? Like all of the other questions in the...
Post40Bloggers - Lymphoma Cancer Awareness Week graphic
September 12th 2016 marks the start of Lymphatic Cancer Awareness Week. I’ve temporarily turned the border on my blog purple to show my support. Shame on you if you thought I was talking about joining UKIP by the way. I’ve never been so insulted in my life! However, if the words...

One of the lost arts of the digital age is the end of the roll photograph. These were the pictures taken, almost at random, so that a film could be developed before the significance of the events captured in the earlier frames was forgotten. These are some of my...

I will start to feel like a ‘proper’ researcher. That’s because I’ve reached the stage in my dissertation when I can conduct a pilot interview. The aim of piloting the interview is to make sure that the questions I’m asking can be understood by the actual group of participants...
Union Jack
I’m proud to be English. It’s the country that I was born in, that educated me and that I’ve always been proud to be able to contribute to through my work, taxes and voluntary efforts. It’s home. I’m proud to be British. For me and many others, Britishness is about...
Older male student
Last week, the House of Lords debated the current state of adult education and lifelong learning. I’ve now taken some time to read through the transcript and I’ve picked out a number of highlights from the excellent contribution made by Baroness Sharp. The debate was also notable for providing a...
Man with downward graph
The number of students studying at The Open University has fallen for the 5th consecutive year, according to figures released by The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Data for student enrolments in 2014/15 were published a few days ago. It makes dismal reading for HE part-timers. Overall, the number of part-time...
Study book and glasses
I’m particularly fond of this post by our Adult Education Editor, Tim, in mid-December. Not least because I am always a little voyeuristic about other people’s work processes, but now even more in awe that Tim carves out time to do sterling work for Post-40 Bloggers with everything else...
The apprentice
One of my guilty pleasures is watching “The Apprentice”. It’s back on our screens at the moment and this week’s episode featured one of my favourite tasks – the scavenger hunt. The teams were asked to source nine different items, at the lowest possible cost, and deliver them back...
